Sylvia Bortin Patience, has practiced midwifery since 1976, when she
began as an apprentice trained home birth midwife in Idaho. In 1984,
she was certified as a Nurse Midwife and licensed in California. She
has attended births in hospital and free standing birth center
practices, as well as home births. She has a Masters Degree in
nursing and is also a Family Nurse Practitioner.
Sylvia has three grown children, the last born at home. She has
been honored to midwife her daughter-in-law and daughter at the
births of her three grandchildren.
Besides midwifery, her loves include gardening, hiking,
backpacking, writing and poetry.
"I believe birth at home with a midwife is the safest place for
women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Women are empowered in their
own homes, where they make the choices. Babies born at home do not
risk unnecessary interventions or procedures, and they remain with
their parents. The future depends on these children, and I think
the most important thing we can do is to bring them into the world
with love and tenderness."
